BEST FACE OF THE MOVIE PART.2
海報細選 PART.2

Carol Lee -《

Christy Wai -《Identity》

As much as we love to, there has never been an award for “Best Movie Poster”. Despite so, it is uplifting to witness Mr. Yuen Tai-Yung, a famous movie poster designer, winning the Hong Kong Film Award for Professional Achievement in this year Hong Kong Film Awards. This is indeed a huge acknowledgement to this much underrated profession! This issue, we continue to look into some of our favourite movie posters.

Carol Lee – “Alien: Covenant” & “Moon”

“Alien: Covenant”
The movie posters for ”Alien: Covenant” are nothing short of brilliance. Take the teaser poster as example, I was totally taken away when I first saw it in a movie theatre, unlike most who saw it online. The design is simple: a pitch dark background; the iconic image of the Alien's head; and a simple tagline 'RUN'. It is simple, catchy and recognizable. Be you a fan of the movie or not, the tension of the movie is instantly conveyed at first glance. This is a perfect rendition of 'less is more'.

The official poster continues the success of the teaser poster. I love how the poster was designed around the iconic image of the Alien. It is striking and artistic. The poster perfectly sums up and hints the movie evolution from a mere futuristic horror movie to the succession of the insightful “Prometheus” which calls upon our worldview. On top of the visual stimulus, the design also incorporates biblical and Ancient Greek symbolism. The oil-painting like texture reminds me of sculptures in “Prometheus”. With a closer look we can spot notable characters such as Engineer and Facehugger included in the poster as well. Is there any meaning in within? The answer is in the movie. Overall, this is a provoking and insightful poster. It stands as stark contrast to the visually-stimulating teaser poster.

“Moon”
The true wonder of this simplistic poster lies beyond the first glance. To appreciate how the designer intricately merges the poster imagery with the movie, we must refer to the plots. The movie is about Astronaut Sam Bell’s (Sam Rockwell) shift at Moon. The mixed sentiments of loneliness, desolation, estrangement and rage are transcended to the artistic imagery in the poster: the empty black void of outer space; the swirling circles forming the moon; the diminutive figure of Sam Rockwell drifting in within the circle centre. The typography of the actor’s name, ‘Sam Rockwell’, at the top-left corner, replicates and fades away. It is an aesthetic design and an allusion to the movie. I would hate to be a spoiler here and I do strongly recommend all of you to watch the movie, and admire the beauty of the poster design.

Christy Wai – “Identity”
Who says a showcase of dream cast on poster is the only golden rule to boost the box office? Take the poster of “Identity” as an example, the design is catchy even without a single image of the cast. So what is the catch? A special design that complements the movie. ”Identity” is a story of a serial killer with Multiple Personality Disorder (MPD). The designer uses an image of a palm as allusion to identity of self. In order to stress on the element of MPD, each finger is a silhouette of a person and the centre of the palm is a human face screaming in desperation. Note that the fingers occupies the brain of the screaming face in the centre of the palm. This is an intentional arrangement to highlight the struggle of a victim with MPD, and corresponds perfectly with the movie’s theme. The black and red palm stands out from the white background and makes the poster even more graphic and recognisable.
