JAPANOPHILE MUSIC FEATURE VOL.2

Zon Lam – X JAPAN

Raiden Wong – L'arc-en-ciel

Patty Chan – Alexandros

(1) 《Famous day》
(2) 《Leaving grapefruit》
(3) 《Run away》
(4) 《Forever young》
(5) 《Snow Sound》

Since rock and roll was spread to Japan in 1970s, Japanese rock bands with varied style have emerged. “Visual Kei” was pioneered in Japan. The emergence of a multitude of underground rock bands contributed to the flourishing Japanese rock (J-Rock) industry in the late 20th century. More popular underground rock bands then began performing regularly in live houses namely “Rokumeikan” in Meguro Ku of Tokyo and “CYBER” in Ikebukuro. At the same time, regular J-Rock competitions provided chances for underground rock bands to perform. J-Rock fever in Japan has provided favorable conditions for nurturing J-Rock culture, giving rise to the birth of many legendary Japanese rock bands. Even if you are not familiar with Japanese music, you must have heard of X JAPAN、B'z、Luna Sea and L'arc-en-ciel. The emergence of these J-Rock bands has given rise to a surge in the number of followers, including the following three Japanophiles who are passionate about J-rock in Chessman HK. Now they will introduce to us their favorite rock bands with great passion.

Zon Lam – X JAPAN

X JAPAN is the number 1 heavy metal band in Japan which pioneered “Visual Kei” in the late 20th century. They have been recognized as one of the legendary bands of the century as they have caused great influence to Japanese music development. X Japan is capable of playing love songs with the blend of two extreme music genres--classic rock and hard rock. Although X JAPAN has been through a lot from withdrawal and death of members, disband to rebirth, they have remained influential till now.

When I was in secondary school, it’s the golden age of Cantonpop which was filled with songs by Leslie Cheung and Alan Tam. By coincidence, I first learnt about X JAPAN and I first came into contact with a different music genre apart from Cantonpop through them. Many of my classmates were learning guitars at that time. X JAPAN’s unique music genre, blended with hard rock and classic rock, had a great impact on post 90s generation. It gradually influenced my music preference. In the hope of performing charmingly like X JAPAN one day, we went to Sino Centre to look for videotapes of X JAPAN’s concerts (both original one and the pirated one), while some of us would even bought sheet music for self-learning. That’s show you how much we love X Japan.

Suggested songs:
(1) “Silent Jealousy”
(2) “Endless Rain”
(3) “Voiceless Screaming”
(5) “X”

Raiden Wong – L'arc-en-ciel

My favorite Japanese band is L'arc-en-ciel, one of the legendary rock bands in Japan. If you are a Japanophile, you will certainly be familiar with its name. L'arc-en-ciel was formed in 1992 and debuted in 1994. It has been twenty-six years since the formation of the band. In the 90s, Asia Regions were greatly influenced by Japanese popular culture. Japanese music videos were frequently shown on television while the new music videos were shown every Sunday night in a music programme called “Sony Music TV Signal”, which I first learnt about L'arc-en-ciel. Their music videos are so cool with unique style and intriguing melodies. Together with the attractive appearance of the four band members, I cannot help falling in love with their music as well as J-Rock.

Many have been attracted by the glamourous appearance and voice of Hyde, the vocal. However, it’s Tetsu, the bassist, who I fall for. I exceptionally appreciate the bassline of every song that he has created and arranged for the band. He is capable to create melodic bassline with a sense of “solo”. More than that, Tetsu never feels satisfied to play only the bass part. Instead, he wants to cover every single string and grade of his guitar. Influenced by Tetsu, I started learning bass and formed my own band. I still remember that the song I played in my first performance was “Stay away”, which is included in my favorite L'arc-en-ciel’s album “Real”. After the year of 2000, each of the members from L'arc-en-ciel began to have personal development and release individual albums. I am very keen on Hyde’s personal album “Roentgen”. Every once in a while, L'arc-en-ciel comes together to create songs and organizes concert tours.

Now I still concerned about L'arc-en-ciel a lot. I would support them in person whenever they organize their concerts in Japan or any other region, because I know it very well that every concert could be their last performance.

Suggested songs:
(2) “Pieces”
(3) “Finale”

Patty Chan – Alexandros

Among all my favorite Japanese bands, Alexandros, the four-member rock band, is the one I wanted to introduce to you the most. When I was having a vacation in Japan, I fall in love with Alexandros’s music instantly when I listened to them the first time. Never do I feel bored by their songs since they have diversified style, outstanding melodies and resonant lyrics that makes people feel positive, passionate and young.

Yoohei Kawakami, being the vocal, composer and songwriter of the band, mentioned in an interview, “The greater the goal is, the bigger the obstacles will be and more criticism one will receive. If you believe that one thing is right, you should believe in it till the end. Despite any obstacle or any negative opinion, I will continue chasing my dream.” Alexandros, who debuted under the name of “Champagne”, did not have a smooth path in their music career but they never gave up. The audiences can feel their passion towards music from their music pieces and they are cheered up at the same time.

Suggested songs:
(1) “Famous day”
(2) “Leaving grapefruit”
(3) “Run away”
(4) “Forever young”
(5) “Snow Sound”
