WHAT PIXAR TEACHES US

The animations of Pixar always conjure up a mosaic of everyone's childhood memories. As we become grown-ups, watching these animations again allows us to reconsider the meaning of love and courage, while also reminding us not to forget the unrelenting support from our families and friends. Entering the 30th anniversary, Pixar Animation Studios will work collaboratively with the Hong Kong Heritage Museum in organizing the exhibition named “Pixar 30 Years of Animation: Hong Kong Celebration of Friendship and Family”, which will be a feast for the eyes of all the Pixar fanatics.

The first Pixar exhibition in Hong Kong was jointly held by Pixar Animation Studios and Hong Kong Heritage Museum in 2011. After 6 years from the previous exhibition, Pixar Animation Studios will present their journey of computer animation to Hongkongers once again. Throughout the past 30 years, Pixar Animation Studios has achieved breakthroughs in striking a balance between tradition and innovation. In the time of modernity, it blends advanced technology and traditional art mediums to create many heart-warming animations which epitomize the best of friendship and family, two of the closest relationships in our lives. Among the Pixar animations, the friendship between Buzz and Woody is probably the most remarkable relationship of all. When Buzz realized that he was only a toy, it was Woody who cheered him up. In addition, Mike and Sully were the best partner that brought Boo home safely. It is always delightful to reminisce about the best scenes of Pixar. This exhibition features an array of artwork pieces including hand-drawn sketches, paintings, storyboards and sculptures. Each of them may seem subtle, but together they can accomplish great things. Apart from the traditional artwork, videos of artists’ interviews will also be played for visitors to explore the story behind each animation.

From “Toy Story” to “Inside Out” that has been all the rage in recent years, Pixar’s animations take root in our hearts for its memorable character designs, lively sketches and smooth transitions. Moreover, the deep meanings in the stories imperceptibly influence our ways of thinking about the world. I still remember after I watched “Toy Story” for the first time, I started to believe that all the stuffed animals could talk like human. It is a common phenomenon that many kids are afraid of the dark, but “Monsters, Inc.” makes use of this fact and brings out an uplifting message that “laughter is more powerful than screams”. As the sequel to “Monsters, Inc.”, “Monster University” is a perfect story to demonstrate how one should pursuit his or her dream. In the animation "Finding Nemo”, a parent-child relationship is beautifully portrayed. Though physically challenged, Nemo went through a number of obstacles and his story embodied the possibility of living with disability. Not only Nemo had learnt a lesson, but his father Marlin also discovered the importance of letting go and let his child grow up. “Inside Out” teaches us that sadness is a legitimate emotion since our lives are filled with ups and downs. Perhaps, the messages conveyed in the animations are somewhat clichés—yet only Pixar can delineate the relationships between characters in such a fine way.

If you are lacking motivation in your bustling life, don’t be afraid. Just pick a Pixar animation and watch it. It will definitely remind you of the joy of chasing your dreams and that your families and friends will always back you up. Living up to the motto of “Create or Haam Jyu”, all Chessman members firmly believe that we will succeed as long as we strive for the best.
