BACK TO CHILDHOOD

Memories are like tree rings, which grow circles upon circles. The accumulation of memories make us who we are today. There is no doubt that the best things about childhood are having a whale of a time in the park playing slides and swings, as well as savoring fun snacks. Do you still remember the taste of childhood snacks? This issue of Chessman Post will take our readers back to the good old days by reminiscing about the popular childhood snacks.

Ring Pop
Which one would you prefer, diamond ring or ring pop? The answer is obvious to all adults, but if I were able to return to the age of 5, I would definitely go for ring pop instead of diamond ring. Because, at that time, we knew nothing about the romance and extravagance of diamond, and we could not resist the temptation of good food. Once we bought ring pops, we would first wear them on our fingers while envisioning ourselves as princes or princesses. Then, we would show off to classmates. However, our fingers would end up being covered with saliva. It also took ages to finish the candy.

Whistle Candy
Talking of fun candies, whistle candy should appear at the top of the list. A “beep” sound can be produced as you blow air through the hole in the middle of the candy. In the past, we would have a little contest with our friends and see who could produce the loudest sound. Sometimes, we would play tricks on our friends by making the whistle sound right around our friends’ ears suddenly.

Yan Yan Cup
Crispy biscuit sticks, paired with chocolate sauce or strawberry sauce, is certainly the perfect combination of snacks. Whenever we open the packaging, we would always grumble about that there is too little sauce, and we would even lick the sauce off the cup. Why don’t we buy a bottle of chocolate sauce instead? At the end of the day, we are just excited about the process of dipping the biscuit sticks in the sauce.

Chocolate Cigarettes Pack
All kids enjoy imaginative role play, especially pretending to be adults. The packaging of chocolate cigarettes is attached with a layer of aluminum foil, and the chocolate sticks are rolled in white papers – the whole thing looks as if it is a real packet of cigarettes. To pretend that we know how to smoke, we would hold the chocolates between our index and middle fingers and blow the air out. When we were young, we thought that pretending smoking made us feel like adults. But it is ridiculous that we all want to return to childhood times as we grow up.

White Rabbit Candy
Although most of the packaging bags of the childhood snacks have been changed, the one of White Rabbit Candy still remains the same after so many years, showing the charm of this time-honored brand. The candy wrapper of white and blue, and the rich milk flavor allow us to recall the nostalgic childhood memories. When we first ate this candy, we would think the glutinous rice paper wrapping was not edible and tried to tear it off. Yet, it is totally edible with an interesting texture.

Mamee Noodle
“The concert of Mamee Monster is about to begin!” Crumble up the crunchy noodles and mix with the seasoning, and there you have it! For unknown reasons, we treasure Mamee noodles so much that we would not waste any of it. Once we have finished the larger pieces of the crumbled noodles, we would pour the small pieces in our mouths and even lick the seasoning off our fingers. By the way, the Mamee Monster who has been with us for years, is nearly 50 years old now.

Pop Rocks
If every snack carries a special meaning, then pop rocks would probably represent “adventurous spirit”. Highly-pressurized carbon dioxide is added in pop rocks to create the “explosive” mouthfeel, which makes us unforgettable. It is thrilling to feel and listen to the pop rocks popping inside our mouths!

Double Popsicle
People seem to get psyched about the double popsicle. Perhaps you have already forgotten the taste of it, but you would never forget the feeling of sharing happiness. Back in the school days, we only had little amount of pocket money, so we usually split the double popsicle and shared with our good friends. Not only can we save a penny, but it is also a proof of true friendship.
