What were you doing at your sweet sixteen? Ring Hun found her hobby all along and started on her music career fearlessly since secondary school. Her latest song ‘Matcha’ illustrates the ‘something’ going on between a young guy and a girl with the taste of tea, but actually it is also a perfect fit to describe the persistence on music of such a young lady – stay tipsy, a state that one enjoys without getting lost, especially that the general Hong Kong and Macau public is still being conservative regarding music dreams. A mixture of sweetness and bitterness is what we call youth.

Not Here to Be a POP Star
Having made her debut 6 years ago, Ring more or less spend fewer time with friends in school but she is glad to have lived a different life. Stepping into the real world did more good than harm to her. ‘I began to sing when I was around sixteen and gained so much more outside the school. In the society, music is not the only thing that I learnt but also how I cope with other people,’ says Ring.

Comparing with other people of the same age, Ring does sound more mature and she has a mellow attitude to music. ‘Fame and popularity are not what we should use to determine whether a singer is successful or not. Besides using our songs and voices to move the audience and evoke resonance, encouraging people with our music career established all along the way is another vital mission. The ultimate importance of music is to use life to affect life.’

Enjoy a Bespoke Music Fit
At the beginning, Ring was singing for her friend who was a song-writer and met many different musicians. At the same time, a Chessman staff member was looking for new singers thus two of them got to know each other which then became the turning point of Ring to join Chessman. ‘I’ve been listening to the music of Chessman and I love the style. I’m so honored to work with the team.’

Spending two years in Chessman, there were a number of changes compared with the past days. Ring’s social sphere grew bigger, her horizon was broadened, and she made new attempts like playing a role in the musical ‘Dreamers! Go! Go!’. She has a higher flexibility on music: she sings ready-to-sing music compositions in the past, but now she can communicate with the producer to have a bespoke music content. ‘“Matcha” (her new song) emphasizes the sweetness and comfortableness, but the challenging part is the dense lyrics (especially the chorus part) while I must not sound so rush. Fortunately me and my producer found a good way out.’ The music video shooting day was also tough. Before the crew moved it was shiny, and it started raining right after they departed – thank god that the weather cleared up which brought a perfect ending to the production of ‘Matcha’.

Just Be Yourself
‘What can you do with your Chinese major?’ this is a question that Ring often being asked after graduated from the Department of Chinese Language and Literature of University of Macau currently. Her answer is still the same after a thousand times. ‘Not necessarily your job is related to the subjects that you studied. Study what you want to study, and ignore those anticipation of the general public.’ This applies to singing as well. Ring has been doing ballads yet she wishes to try more like R&B without restricting her music possibilities. Why do you have to go by the book? It is always better to live in an interesting way.
